Last week we said goodbye to Jackson, our 9 year old doberman pincher. Although we knew this day would come, it came quickly and unexpectedly. In fact Ethan, Emma, Jackson and I would take our last walk together just a few hours before he died.
He was our baby before we had our human babies. He was loving and gentle. I have to admit that I was a little nervous about getting a doberman when Bryan first suggested this breed. However, one look at this cute little face and all my reservations went out the window. We got Jackson a few months after we were married. Although he looked mean to those who didn't know him he was a gentle giant who loved snuggling on the couch (and even in bed, when Bryan wasn't around). As our family expanded Jackson happily welcomed Ethan and most recently Emma with curious sniffs and warm kisses.
For now we are left with a big empty spot on the living room floor and an even larger empty spot in our hearts.

We are so fortunate to be able to spend Christmas together with my parents and sister this year. With a 2 year old and a 3 year old, it was really all about the kids this year. It is refreshing and magical to view Christmas through the eyes of a child, where Santa really brings you goodies in the morning and each present is their new favorite toy.

I'm not sure who enjoyed their new presents more, Ethan or Bryan. The pictures below were taken with Bryan's new Canon T2i digital camera. Bryan also got a Kinect for his XBox. Little did I know it would be so much fun to watch someone play a video game. Meanwhile, Ethan loves all things dinosaur, car or dragon related. We now have more dinosaurs and cars than we know what to do with. And I love my new MacBook, which is actually for Ethan also. He like to watch videos and play games on Nick Jr and Disney.com.
But most importantly we all stopped, took our time and enjoyed a few together as a family.

One of the great thing about Bryan's job is that he occasionally gets to travel to some really nice places. This year we decided to incorporate our first family vacation out of a conference Bryan was attending in Orlando. I have to admit I was a little nervous about flying with a 2 year old, but we lucked out and got a direct flight on JetBlue. I definitely recommend them for anyone traveling with kids or husbands with short attention spans. We all survived the flight and make it to our hotel right in the heart of Disney World. Our second challenge would be making it around the parks without losing our little one who doesn't like to hold your hand for more than a few seconds and thinks it is quite funny to run from his parents. I even resorted to buying a wrist leash, I know, I know, I can hear my sister now saying how awful those things are, but at Disney we needed some back up. We started day 1 at Magic Kingdom, then Ethan at I visited Typhoon Lagoon and Hollywood Studios on day 2. Day 3 was a relaxing day back at Typhoon Lagoon followed up by a return trip to Magic Kingdom on day 4. Ethan really enjoyed meeting Buzz Lightyear, Lightning McQueen and Mater. Ethan and Bryan rode in the race cars which was great until they had to get out of the car. Of all the rides I think he enjoyed riding the escalators at the Contemporary Resort before our dinner with Mickey.

Yes, it doesn't seem that long ago that I was writing about his first birthday. This year we were so lucky to have great friends, great weather and no melt downs. The kids and dads had fun getting in the pool and thanks to little Elliot, Ethan now knows how to jump in the pool.

Ethan picked out a Toy Story theme this year, it was a tough choice between that and Cars. I'm not sure where he learned to blow out candles, but he did a great job.

Later, after a good nap we took his new bike out for a spin around the neighborhood...I think it was a hit.

I have not used this blog for anything more than posting family pictures and keeping you updated on our lives, but there are a few thing I feel are important to pass along, not only as a mom, but as a health care professional. The debate on vaccines continues, however, the evidence continues to grow in favor of their safety and lack of evidence that they cause autism. So much so that even some of the most well know proponents are changing their minds, including Jenny McCarthy. Here is a link to a blog from the author of a great book about parenting.

A year in review...well the second half at least

I am finally making my way back to our blog after many, many months away. I blame Bryan really...you see, he bought me an Iphone and I became addicted to it. I read my emails, keep up with Facebook and play Oregon Trail. As a result of my new found vice I have neglected this blog as I rarely use my home laptop. So where do I begin to catch up? I really admire those of you who blog regularly and actually have witty, humorous things to say. I find the holidays, particularly the new year a time to reflect and try to be better.
Since my last post in August our lives have changed in ways we could not have imagined. Ethan has continued to grow (he's still on the bottom of the growth charts, but plodding along).

Bryan and I both turned another year older, 31 is not nearly as cool as being 30, but at least I still occasionally get carded buying wine at Costco...although the "I didn't realize you were that old!" comment by the checker sort of negates any positives of the whole situation.

Bryan and I took our first vacation since Ethan was born (and my first trip away from him for more than a day)! We were so honored to share in our good friend Chris' wedding on the beautiful North Fork of Long Island. We went on an amazing wine tour, relaxed and celebrated with dear friends. We even spent a day in the city before heading back to Texas and reality.

For some crazy reason I decided to train for my second marathon as an attempt to get back into shape. I had an amazing running partner and friend who helped me train and complete the San Antonio Rock n Roll Marathon in November.

Bryan continues to kick but and take names at work, managing more people at work and taking on more responsibilities. I am so proud of his accomplishments, his drive and his determination, am I'm just glad I don't have to work for him...I think he would have fired me by now.

When our ice machine stopped working, what started as just replacing the refrigerator turned into a huge kitchen remodel including new granite countertops, all new appliances, re-staining the cabinets and new paint. As much HGTV as I watch I don't know why I was suprised when a 2 week project has turned into a 2 1/2 month project. We survived for two weeks without a kitchen sink or a stove and thanks to Steve and Kristina didn't have to stay home with the toxic fumes. In the end we have a fabulous new kitchen that was worth all the headaches and waiting.

But the most significant change this year was the loss of my grandmother shortly after Thanksgiving. Inga Dixon was one of the most amazing persons I have ever met. She was loving, kind, strong and generous. She outlived my other grandparents by 20+ years and as a result, until now I have never know a time without her. We all knew this time would come and I am so thankful that she was able to spend her last days at her home in Johnson City surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We had snow this year in central Texas the week of her death, which is a rare event, but one that is fitting for a girl from a small Swedish town who settled in West Texas of all places. One of the last times we talked she said she wished she could have done more for me and my sister, which is so her, she was always doing things for others. We reminisced about the things she taught me, here are just a few:
1. Baking. While my mom has many talents, she fully admits that cooking much less baking has never really been one. Inga on the other hand was a masterful baker. From apple pies to sugar cookies to cakes, it is all because of her that I have the basics.
2. Crochet. While she knitted sweaters and blankets the only thing I really ever finished were pot holders and those usually ended up in an odd shape.
3. Swedish. I can count to ten and ask if you would like a hot dog in Swedish because of her.

This Christmas was hard, our first without her. I only managed to put up the tree this year, I couldn't bring myself to put out my Santa collection (it was inspired by her own collection, another thing we shared), although they will be up next year...she would like that. Her Christmas sweaters did make an appearance this year...Steve and Bryan wore them proudly.

Life has been a little crazy lately and I have neglected our blog. I am still working on getting pictures from the 4th of July off the camera and onto our computer...Bryan doesn't let me around his computer and I can only nag him so much. We had a great time at the Callaway's again this year. Ethan is growing each day. He is running all over the place, and getting into everything. He loves to play outside, I just have to keep him from eating rocks and dirt. We had some family photos taken a little over a month ago to celebrate Ethan turning one. Ethan Turns One

Ethan's first birthday was Saturday, which is still a little hard for me to believe. Although the week before his birthday was a little stressful, it was all worth it! We had originally planned to have a pool party, but the weather had a different plan. It began pouring down rain at 3 o'clock when his party was supposed to start. I can't thank all of our friend and family who braved the weather and came to celebrate Ethan's big day. The kids had fun running around the house and playing with Ethan's toys and the adults had fun playing Guitar Hero and drinking Bryan's world famous margaritas. Ethan really made out great with lots of really loud toys, one of which was a payback for a gift that Gracie got for Christmas (guess I will have to think about future presents a little more closely). He wasn't too excited about his cake but did manage to get icing all over his face and clothes.

What a year we have had and how far we have come. Ethan says a few words now (mama, dada, hi and bye). We are still waiting on teeth, but he can eat regular food, in fact carne guisada, rice, beans and guacamole are among his favorites. Oh yeah, and crackers too, no meal is complete without at least a few crackers. He is cruising around and has taken a few steps recently. I am so excited to see Ethan continue to grow and can't wait for what this year will bring.

Ethan is starting to show is us more of his personality these days, particularly during meal time. He is becoming pickier about what foods he likes and of those foods half of the time he wants to feed himself. He doesn't really like some of the usual kid favorites like mac and cheese or applesauce, but give him baked fish, guacamole or carne guisada and he's in heaven. Last week after he didn't want peas, carrots, or mixed fruit (which is usually a hit) he got a few bites of pizza. He was so excited, he though it was the greatest thing!

It has been a while since I've updated our blog. Life has been crazy lately and sometimes I'm just trying to hang on. Some days I'm lucky if everyone has been feed, a few charts got done and I slept a few hours. Ethan was sick with a stomach bug for a few days, then a mysterious fever and now he may be teething. The other issue is our new digital camera. Our son was already 9 months old and the only video we had were "shorts" from our old camera. So as not to let more of his life go by undocumented, I finally convinced Bryan to get a new camera. Anyone who knows Bryan knows that any big purchase must be researched, thought about carefully, and then researched some more, then if he hasn't forgotten, finally purchased. So to make a long story short I still don't know how to download pictures from the new camera, mainly because I haven't taken the time to learn, so at least for now have to rely on Bryan.

The start of the new year has been a busy one for us. Ethan is taking baths in the big tub now, still working on crawling and eating everything in sight at dinner (3 jars of level 2 baby food!!!). Bryan's family gave Ethan a Tonka truck for Christmas which he just loves. He loves to push it and ride on it, the only problem is that no matter if he gets one trip around the living room or one hundred its not enough. He really lets you know that he is not pleased. As you can imagine it gets a little hard on the back after the 10th time around. So last weekend we were keeping Gracie for the day and enlisted her to help out. They started out by pushing the truck around together, then we let Gracie push him around. Ethan loved it, and while Gracie did take a few corners pretty fast they both survived.

It seems like Ethan is developing and growing at record speed these days. We have had several new developments in the past two weeks. He has mastered eating pureed foods and a few days ago we started some "finger foods" that he could feed himself. After a few unsure moments he was ready for more. He's still working on getting things in his mouth instead of just on my floor. Bryan is not as excited about this new development...as many of you moms know how messy this can be.
He is also doing a commando type crawl now and I don't think it will be too long before he has this mastered as well. He started with just pulling himself around in the floor with his arms and now he is realizing he can get a lot more places when he gets his legs moving. I'm sure our animals won't be too excited, he is already tormenting the cats by pulling his hair when they get too close.
We also had the first bath in the big tub this week. It's amazing how these little accomplishments mean so much.

We celebrated at our house again this year and had the best Christmas. We had so much fun watching Gracie open her presents and Ethan even had fun with the ribbons and bows. Bryan got some gourds from my mom and Ethan got lots of toys that make lots of noise. Gracie got her own pair of high heels, a purse and a cell phone so she is ready for her night out on the town.

We took Ethan to my office Christmas party this year. I was a little nervous about him protesting once his bed time approached, but I put him in the sling and he ended up falling asleep. He slept through most of the party!

Ethan made it through surgery yesterday and everything went well, even despite some confusion about the location of his surgery. His surgery ended up being slightly more complicated than his doctor originally anticipated, but it could not have gone better. He was sleeping in my arms when the nurse took him back and he woke up smiling and laughing. One nurse even said she would trade in her new dachshund puppy to take Ethan home instead, which we were told was quite a big offer. Today he was playing and laughing as if nothing had happened.

Ethan turned 6 months today! I am so grateful for his wonderful little life. Thanksgiving is next week and this year I have so much to be thankful for. This time last year Bryan and I had gone through several losses in our lives and could not yet realize how different and wonderful this year would be. I am looking forward to spending some time with our families during the holidays and hope that I can truly be thankful for all the blessings in my life.

Well today didn't go exactly as planned and I learned that babies, even my sweet baby Ethan, have their own plans. Ethan was schedule to have his circumcision today(it was going to be a little more complicated due to a structural abnormality in his penis, and the ob/gyn wouldn't do it in the hospital when he was born). We stopped feeding him after midnight and arrived at the surgical center at 6 am. During his pre-op exam the nurse checked his vitals and he had a fever of 101.6. Anyone who knows Ethan knows his head always feels hot and they were taking his temp with the temporal (forehead) thermometer. We made the nurse take his temp 4 or 5 times to be sure. We had kept him out of daycare yesterday because several kids including Gracie had a stomach virus and until they took that temperature we had no idea he was sick. So because it was an elective procedure the doctor recommended postponing the procedure and we agreed. We packed up and left the surgical center and made a stop by our pediatrician's office where the temperature was confirmed and Ethan's doctor said he was the happiest sick kid he had seen but he would probably get worse in the next few days. So here we are, Ethan has been sleeping a lot today, which is very unlike him, and at least we have the weekend to take care of him. I guess we learned today that Ethan is going to do things when he wants to. Although we were disappointed to have to wait for Ethan to have his surgery, I am just thankful each day that we have a healthy happy baby.

Ethan couldn't really trick or treat this year, but I thought I would dress him up anyway. We did hand out candy, but Ethan wasn't really too excited about wearing his costume. I think he only wore it for 10 minutes before he protested enough for Bryan to rescue him. Maybe next year we can join cousin Gracie for some real trick-or-treating.

We had a great weekend in College Station. We stayed with Doug's parents who were gracious enough to take care of Ethan and Elliot while we went to the game and had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. Even though our Aggies lost it was still fun to go to a game and see our college friends. Elliot is so cute, he is 8 months old and already crawling and pulling himself up.

Ethan and I are hanging out at the house on my day off and I was trying to get some video of him laughing, but as soon as I start filming he immediately gets quiet. So I decided to take some pictures instead. I was thinking about Anne's pictures of her kids at different ages in the same chair and what a great way that was to see how they are growing. When you see them everyday you don't always realize just how quickly they are growing. I remembered that when Ethan was only 2 or 3 weeks old Bryan wanted some "action shots" of him, but since he wasn't really doing much at 2 weeks we decided to incorporate Jackson on the couch (his favorite spot for about 23 hours a day), and he became our backdrop. Jackson has been so good with Ethan, he likes to investigate him by smelling his head and seems concerned when Ethan cries. Ethan hasn't gotten any slobbery kisses from Jackson yet, but I'm sure he'll get one any day now when he least expects it.

Here's some pictures from Ethan's first "meal." He wasn't too excited about the rice cereal and only ended up eating a spoon or two. He does like a little in a bottle, so we are giving him some once a day for now.

We also made our first trip out to the farm to visit my family. We had fun sitting out on the swing, feeding the goldfish, watching Gracie run around the yard and throw dirt on herself, and eating good food (thanks mom...don't let anyone question the quality of your cooking).

4 month check up

Ethan had his 4 month check up yesterday and all is going well. He is in the 50th percentile for height at 24 inches but still in the 5th percentile for weight at 11 lbs 2 oz. He's gaining at a steady rate though. Our pediatrician gave us the ok to start some solids, so we will be trying some rice cereal tonight. He's making lots of noises now and showing us more of his personality every day.

Bryan's birthday party was great and we thank everyone who joined us. Bryan got some Hungarian wines and a Playstation 3, so Ethan and I may never see him again! Heather and Dom brought their beautiful baby girl, Brooklyn. She is so cute and has so much hair! I think Steve may have met a formidable opponent when it comes to telling politically incorrect jokes. Shelly, the wife of one of Bryan's co-workers, is one of the funniest women I know and the jokes she and Steve told included topics from Michael Jackson to incestuous rednecks. We had a great weekend thanks to our wonderful family and friends.

Ethan and I can't wait for Byran to get home from his conference tomorrow. I've been a "single mom" this week and boy is it tough. I really admire moms who do this all the time. I wasn't really on my own though, I had help from my sister and couldn't have made it without her. We stayed with Kristina and Steve for two days. Ethan started daycare this week and Kristina dropped him off in the morning so I could go to work. He will be in a woman's home with about ten other kids including his cousin Gracie. He did well on his first day, although apparently he likes to be held...alot. I don't know where he got that from.

The adventures of Ethan and Adrienne...or why I shouldn't be left home alone

Ethan and I slept well last night after a crazy Saturday. Apparently I can't be left home alone! Byran left for New York City on Friday for a work conference. He left a few days early to have some fun. He enjoyed eating at some hole in the wall places in Chinatown with our friend Chris. He has to do this without me since I'm not a fan of eating stray cat and dog.
Anyway, I'm home alone with Ethan for the first time and I usually get a little paranoid and anxious the first night alone. I only lived by myself for six months before Bryan and I got married so I'm not used to all the quiet. So to make myself feel more secure I make sure I lock all the doors, even the one to our bedroom. The door to the backyard has two locks, one on the deadbolt and one on the doorknob, now usually we only lock the deadbolt, but I decided to lock them both. We made it through the night and the next morning Ethan was a little fussy so I decided to walk around in the backyard for a few minutes to calm him down. Mission accomplished, as usual he calmed down and we could go about our day...except that it might be a little hard since we were locked out of the house!
I realized when I walked outside I had unlocked the deadbolt, but not the doorknob lock. Apparently the door will open from the inside when it is still locked...who designs a lock like this???? After checking all the doors and windows (even though I knew I had locked them all the night before) I started thinking about my options...break a window, call a locksmith or call my sister who has a key. I decided to call my sister, Kristina, but of course I didn't have my phone, so with the clothes I had slept in on, including no bra and no make-up on, I walked over to a neighbor's house to use the phone. I could only remember two numbers (Bryan and my mom) since I don't have to because they are stored in my cell phone. After calling my mom we waited at the neighbor's house and I prayed Ethan wouldn't poop since I didn't have any diapers and could make without getting hungry although I am breastfeeding, so if needed I could sit in the backyard and feed him. My mom relayed what I had done and Kristina, Steve, Gracie and Scooter came to our rescue. My dad ended up coming over to help with Ethan and we all went out for lunch. For a day that started with being locked out of the house it turned into a great day with my family and one that I will look back and laugh about and one day tell Ethan about what his crazy mother did. Thanks again to my wonderful family who saved the day.

Labor Day, Bath Time and Big Boy Clothes

We had an easy going Labor Day this year. On Saturday we had fun at Kristina and Steve's place hanging out and eating regular sized burgers. On Monday Kirk and his daughter Julia came over to swim and our college friend Eray stopped by to beat Bryan at playing pool and hang out by the pool. Where did the summer go?

Between the two of us and my dad Ethan may be traumatized by the flash of the camera when he's older, but he is changing so fast that we want to capture each and every moment. Ethan loves bath time, especially splashing water all over his dad.

Ethan likes to look nice when we go out and about on the town. Ok, ok so maybe these clothes are still a little big for him...he is 10 lbs now, but he just looked so cute in them. Bryan though he looked like a vato...he is part mexican! We were just honoring our heritage.

Well its official, I'm old. I celebrated my 30th birthday last week with my wonderful family. I already have the best present ever, my son Ethan, so I enjoyed a low key birthday this year. Some good food at Benihana, ice cream cake and precious time with my family. Who could ask for anything more! Where has the time gone? For Bryan and I this year was our high school 10 year reunion and in December we will have been married for 7 years. Of course we started our family and are both busy nurturing our careers. Thanks to my mom and dad, Kristina, Steve, Gracie, Bryan and Ethan for making my day so special.

After just over 2 months at home with Ethan, it was time for me to return to work. Fortunately I have a great boss and a great husband who have allowed me to work part time. Although it has been tough, going back to work has been a good thing for me. I love my job and the people that I work with so going back to work has been fun. Plus Ethan is being spoiled by his Mimi and Papi while I am at work so I know he is in good hands. But of course I really enjoy my days off with Ethan. Everyone says they grow so fast and I am learning that first hand. He has changed so much in only 3 short months. I'm so glad I'm here to experience some of those wonderful once in a lifetime moments. For instance, Ethan started rolling over a little over a week ago...he'll try anything to avoid "tummy time." I think he may have beaten Gracie on this one, but we will have to defer to the judges!

We got dressed up and went to lunch with Mimi and some of her friends. Bryan thought he looked like Andre 3000 and aunt Kristina thought he was ready to play golf. Ethan decided to spit up (one of the few times he does) after this picture was taken. I think he was ready for some more comfortable clothes.

This year we were invited to the Callaway's lake house for the 4th. We traveled to Gordon, TX and enjoyed lake Palo Pinto. Cynthia and Gary (Bryan's aunt and uncle) hosted a great weekend. Bryan enjoyed wake boarding, riding on the jet ski, swimming and playing with the kids. Ethan and I enjoyed relaxing by the water and napping. There was lots of great food and good fun. Ethan met some of his cousins for the first time...I think he and Kaden will have fun in the future playing together.

Our excitement started Thursday afternoon at Adrienne's weekly checkup. Her blood pressure was elevated and the Doctor said to be safe it was time to induce. We rushed over to the hospital and she was induced around 6pm on Thursday. At around 8:53am the next day, Friday, we welcomed Ethan Connor Chagoly into the world! Although labor was long, it wasn't that bad (or at least that's what Adrienne says). Ethan is about 2 weeks early, and he weighs 5 lbs 14 oz. He is doing great and so is momma.
